Garden Route: guided tour or self-drive?

The same road either way. What changes is who drives, who plans and how long you stay at each stop — the points that decide between a tour and a hire car.

The Garden Route is a road trip whichever way you do it. The operators plan around 450 km from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn on the first day alone, and 4 to 6 hours of driving a day on their tours. The question is not whether you spend time on the road, but whether you want to be the one at the wheel — and how much say you want over where you stop and for how long.

A guided tour takes the driving, the route and the bookings off your hands; a hire car gives you your own pace. Below are the tours that make most sense if you would rather be driven, then the points that decide between the two.

The distances are the same either way

The operators’ own figures give a sense of scale: about 450 km and around six hours from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn via Route 62, about 400 km on to the Wilderness coast, and about 1,200 km for a three-day round trip. The five-day Hotspots2c tour to Addo covers about 1,900 km. Whether you drive or are driven, the Garden Route is a long way from Cape Town.

What differs is what you do with those hours. On a tour you can look out of the window or talk to the guide. At the wheel — on the left-hand side of the road — you do the concentrating, and the long days are yours to split up as you like.

What a guided tour takes off your hands

  • The driving. Your guide drives the whole route, including the mountain passes on Route 62.
  • The beds. Accommodation is included on every multi-day tour on this site; on the Hotspots2c tours you choose the class (backpacker, 3-star or 4-star) when you book.
  • The plan. The stops, the game drives and, depending on the tour, entrance fees such as the Cango Caves (on the Hotspots2c three-day and the Bokbus four-day tour) or Addo and Tsitsikamma (on the Hotspots2c five-day tour) are arranged.
  • The start in Cape Town. The Bokbus tours include pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation; the Hotspots2c tours meet near the DHL Stadium in Green Point, with hotel pick-up within 5 km of the centre if you book at least two days ahead.
  • Company. Travelling alone, you share the days with a group — one reviewer of the six-day Earthstompers tour singles this out for solo travellers.

What you give up

  • Your own pace. The operator sets how long you stay at each stop. The most common criticism in the reviews of the five-day Hotspots2c tour is too much time in the vehicle and too little at the places themselves.
  • Early starts, late returns. The Hotspots2c tours leave Green Point at 6:45am; the three-day tour gets back between 8pm and 10pm.
  • A fixed order. Hotspots2c notes that its itineraries can change and occasionally run in reverse order.
  • Choice of extras. Optional activities on tour, such as the Bloukrans bungee jump or an elephant encounter, are booked and paid locally — and the time for them is set by the tour.

When the tour is the better choice

If you have three to six days, do not want to drive long distances on the left, are travelling alone, or want game drives and park entrance organised for you, a guided tour removes most of the planning. It also makes sense if you would rather not return a hire car at the far end: the one-way Earthstompers tour ends in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

When a hire car fits better

If you want to stay several nights in one place, travel with young children (the Hotspots2c tours list children under 8 as not suitable), or plan your days around activities such as swimming with seals in Plettenberg Bay or the canopy tour at Storms River, driving yourself gives you that freedom. The activities above can be booked on their own for the day you choose. Keep in mind that the guided multi-day tours on this site all start in Cape Town.

★
In short

Short on time, travelling alone or not keen on long drives on the left? Take a tour and accept its pace. Want to linger, travel with small children or build the trip around activities? Drive yourself and book the activities on their own. Either way, plan for long days on the road.

From Cape Town: 5-Day Best of Garden Route and Addo Safari

★ 4.7 (246 reviews)

“Long time on the road but absolutely worth it. An unforgettable trip! Our tourguide Isaac was showing us everything we had to see 👍 Would always do it again 😊”
Frederik · Germany · January 2026
“First of all: our highly competent guide-driver Isaac. He was friendly yet kept us strict on schedule. He explained yet did not overdo like many other guides. The quality of the back-pack hostels (single room) were above my expectation (equivalent to 3* hotel). The road is beautiful and the sights spectacular. Activity was diverse and well chosen for various levels of physical capacity. …”
Nava · Israel · March 2026
Critical review
“Too many car trips, too little seen”
Verified traveler · Germany · March 2026 · translated review

Reviewers praise the guides — several are named — and the variety along the way. The criticism is consistent: three critical reviews say too much of the tour is spent in the vehicle and too little at the places themselves, and two five-star reviews mention the long hours on the road too, while saying it was worth it. One reviewer found the minivan uncomfortable and the days thin on activities unless you pay for extras, and one found the standard of the backpacker option uneven. Worth knowing: the Addo game drive on this tour is in the tour vehicle, not in an open safari vehicle.

Cape Town: Garden Route and Addo Elephant Park 6-Day Safari

★ 4.8 (184 reviews)

“It was indescribably amazing! Our guide Christine was fantastic, she put in so much effort and took the best photos. It was truly a wonderful experience. We got to see the most beautiful places in South Africa and could also take part in extra activities like bungee jumping and skydiving. Traveling in a group was also great for meeting new people, especially if you’re traveling alone. …”
Elisa · Austria · March 2026
“Overall, the trip was wonderful. We visited places we never would have seen without a guide (Mark), who was exceptional. We were also lucky to be with such a lively and supportive group! Although some days involved a lot of traveling in the van, the stops made everything much lighter and more fun. Unfortunately, our group experienced the misfortune of the van breaking down mid-journey, which meant we lost a few hours …”
Elizabeth · Brazil · February 2026 · translated review
Critical review
“My trip was filled with amazing sightseeing, comfortable accommodation, and delicious food. However, the extended duration of transportation, mainly spent in a not-so-comfortable mini bus, was a drawback. I suggest visiting fewer places or extending the itinerary to strike a better balance. Overall, a memorable experience with room for improvement in transportation logistics.”
Theis · Denmark · January 2024

The reviews centre on the guides and the mix of places; several mention the group as a plus, one of them especially for solo travellers. We found one critical review with text: it praises the sightseeing, the accommodation and the food but found the long stretches in a not-so-comfortable minibus a drawback. A five-star review also mentions long days in the van and a breakdown that cost a few hours, and one from June describes two days when the national parks and trails were closed because of the risk of flash floods — the group fitted the activities into the remaining days.

4-Day Garden Route Experience

★ 4.8 (16 reviews)

“The itinerary was well planned with thoughts put into offering a variety of experience over the 4 days. Transportation was also comfortable for the long drives and the guide shared good information throughout the trip. Highly recommend.”
Audrey · Singapore · December 2025

The reviews we collected for the four-day tour are positive: they praise the guides, the variety of stops and the pace, and one describes the transport as comfortable for the long drives. The tour has only a small number of reviews so far. The only critical review with text that we found is from 2022 and is about the share of time spent driving; we do not show reviews from before 2024.

FAQ

Is it better to do the Garden Route with a tour or by car?

It depends on what you want to control. A guided tour takes the driving, the accommodation and the route planning off your hands, and on some tours the park entrance. A hire car gives you your own pace and the freedom to stay longer in one place. The distances are the same either way: the operators plan around 450 km for the first day from Cape Town.

How much driving is there on a guided tour?

A lot. The operators give 4 to 6 hours of driving a day on their tours. The three-day Hotspots2c tour covers about 1,200 km and the five-day Hotspots2c tour to Addo about 1,900 km. Several reviews of the longer tours mention the time in the vehicle.

Are guided Garden Route tours good for solo travellers?

They take care of the parts that are hardest alone: you travel with a group, the accommodation is arranged and you do not do the long drives by yourself. One reviewer of the six-day Earthstompers tour points out that the group is a good way to meet people when travelling alone.

Can I join a tour for part of the route only?

The multi-day tours on this site start in Cape Town. The one-way Earthstompers tour ends in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth); the others return to Cape Town. For single days along the route, the activities — seals in Plettenberg Bay, the Tsitsikamma canopy tour, the Knysna lagoon cruise — can be booked on their own.

Are there age limits on the tours?

The Hotspots2c tours list children under 8 as not suitable. Earthstompers accepts guests up to 65 on its six-day tour if they are fit and healthy. The Bokbus product pages do not state a minimum age — check before booking with young children.
