Five or six days from Cape Town

Garden Route and Addo tours from Cape Town

The Garden Route and Addo Elephant National Park in one trip. What the combined tours include, how much time you get in Addo, and where the tour ends.

Addo Elephant National Park lies beyond the eastern end of the Garden Route, so the guided tours from Cape Town that include it run five or six days. Most of that time goes to the Garden Route itself — Route 62, Knysna, Tsitsikamma — and to the road. Addo is one part of the trip: on the Hotspots2c tour, for example, it is a game drive of about two hours in the tour vehicle.

The tours differ in three points that matter: whether the Addo entrance fee is included, what kind of vehicle you see the park from, and whether the tour brings you back to Cape Town or ends in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The 5-Day Best of Garden Route & Addo Safari by Hotspots2c Tours (currently 4.7★ from 246 reviews) and the 6-Day Garden Route & Addo Safari by Earthstompers Adventures (currently 4.8★ from 184 reviews) sit side by side below with the Bokbus five-day tour and the one-way Earthstompers tour.

How much Addo is in a Garden Route and Addo tour?

Less than the name suggests. Of five or six days, the Addo part is one stretch of one day. The Hotspots2c five-day tour spells it out: a game drive of about two hours, in the tour vehicle rather than an open safari vehicle. The other tours describe Addo as a stop on the route; the Earthstompers six-day tour offers a drive in an open vehicle as an optional extra.

That is fine if the Garden Route is the main event and Addo the finale. If the elephants are the reason for your trip, a full day in the park works better: the Addo day safaris from Gqeberha run 7 to 9 hours, some of them in open vehicles, most with the park fee included. Our sister site compares them — Addo day safaris from Port Elizabeth. Combined with the one-way tour, that can mean ending in Gqeberha and adding a day in the park.

One more point for the southern summer: Hotspots2c notes that on its five-day tour in peak season (mid-December to early January) you may stay two nights in Jeffreys Bay instead of Addo.

Park entrance: included or on top?

The Hotspots2c tour lists the Addo and Tsitsikamma entrance fees as included. The Bokbus five-day tour lists the Addo entrance fee as not included — you pay the SANParks conservation fee on top. The current fee for international adults, with the date it is valid until, is in the Addo section of our overview page; SANParks revises its fees every 1 November. For the Earthstompers tours, check the inclusions on the product page before you book.

Round trip or one-way?

Addo is close to Gqeberha, and a long way from Cape Town. The round trips therefore spend a good part of the last day or two driving back west. The one-way Earthstompers tour (currently R 14,700 per person) drops you in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on day 5 instead — the better fit if you fly on from there or continue along the coast. Plan your onward travel before you book.

Style of travel

The tours are built differently. Hotspots2c lets you choose the accommodation class when you book and lists the tour as unsuitable for children under 8 and for people with back problems. Earthstompers stays in backpacker lodges or guest houses on its six-day tour, describes it as active and accepts guests up to 65 if they are fit and healthy. Bokbus includes a night at the Garden Route Game Lodge on the way back — a second round of game viewing after Addo.

Common to all of them is the driving: the operators give 4 to 6 hours a day on the Hotspots2c tours, and the critical reviews of the five- and six-day tours are mostly about time in the vehicle. For the Bokbus five-day tour and the one-way Earthstompers tour we found no critical reviews with text; one reviewer of the Bokbus tour mentions a lot of driving and raises a point about the dinners listed in the tour description — check the meals on the product page.

★
In short

Want park entrance included and a clear Addo game drive? The Hotspots2c five-day tour — with a 2-day cancellation deadline. Prefer a sociable, active group and a sixth day? Earthstompers. Game lodge night on top of Addo? Bokbus, with the Addo fee paid separately. Flying on from the Eastern Cape? The one-way tour ends in Gqeberha. Mainly after elephants? A day safari from Gqeberha gives you more time in the park.

What travellers say about the Addo tours

Real traveller reviews from GetYourGuide.

From Cape Town: 5-Day Best of Garden Route and Addo Safari

★ 4.7 (246 reviews)

“One of the best parts of my South Africa Trip. Lots of things to see and do, while not being overwhelming. Very educational. TK was an amazing guide.”
Laura · Germany · April 2026
Critical review
“In general, this tour is not worth the price. We spent a lot of time travelling in a really uncomfortable mini-van, with the impossibility to sleep because of the noise and the trembling. You have only 1 hour of activity per day basically, so every day seemed pretty empty and useless. It only helped us to do extra activities (payed aside) to have something more to do during the day. …”
Alessio · Italy · March 2026
Critical review
“Too many car trips, too little seen”
Verified traveler · Germany · March 2026 · translated review

Reviewers praise the guides — several are named — and the variety along the way. The criticism is consistent: three critical reviews say too much of the tour is spent in the vehicle and too little at the places themselves, and two five-star reviews mention the long hours on the road too, while saying it was worth it. One reviewer found the minivan uncomfortable and the days thin on activities unless you pay for extras, and one found the standard of the backpacker option uneven. Worth knowing: the Addo game drive on this tour is in the tour vehicle, not in an open safari vehicle.

Cape Town: Garden Route and Addo Elephant Park 6-Day Safari

★ 4.8 (184 reviews)

“The week long experience was excellent. We did and saw so much in the 6 days. Every day was different. We were unfortunate to be caught in bad weather for 2 days when the all the National Parks and trails were closed due to the risk of flash floods however we managed move around the activities and managed to fit them in on the remaining days. …”
Rachel · United Kingdom · June 2026
Critical review
“My trip was filled with amazing sightseeing, comfortable accommodation, and delicious food. However, the extended duration of transportation, mainly spent in a not-so-comfortable mini bus, was a drawback. I suggest visiting fewer places or extending the itinerary to strike a better balance. Overall, a memorable experience with room for improvement in transportation logistics.”
Theis · Denmark · January 2024

The reviews centre on the guides and the mix of places; several mention the group as a plus, one of them especially for solo travellers. We found one critical review with text: it praises the sightseeing, the accommodation and the food but found the long stretches in a not-so-comfortable minibus a drawback. A five-star review also mentions long days in the van and a breakdown that cost a few hours, and one from June describes two days when the national parks and trails were closed because of the risk of flash floods — the group fitted the activities into the remaining days.

From Cape Town: 5-Day Garden Route & Addo Elephant Park Tour

★ 4.9 (24 reviews)

“It really was an amazing experience. Everything was perfectly planned out, we saw a lot of things and had a lot of fun. The most amazing out of all the things we did in my vieuw was the adoo elephant park. We saw a wide variety of animals in the wild, bufallo's, a lot of different antilopes, baboons, ..., but also an enormous amount of elephants enjoying themselves in the mudpools. …”
Arne · Sweden · October 2024
“We loved the 5 day garden route tour, there is a lot of driving but we k re this in advance but totally worth the places we visited. Vaughan our guide was fantastic, so friendly and helpful and always asked our preferences on places we would like to prioritise to see, he really made a positive difference on the tour. Only “complaint” we would have is on the tour description it says includes 4 dinners, though this was …”

FAQ

How long do you spend in Addo on a Garden Route and Addo tour?

Usually part of one day. The Hotspots2c five-day tour lists a game drive of about two hours in the tour vehicle; the other tours describe Addo as a stop on the route, and the Earthstompers six-day tour offers a drive in an open vehicle as an optional extra. If Addo is your main goal, a full-day safari from Gqeberha gives you more time in the park.

Is the Addo entrance fee included?

It depends on the tour. The Hotspots2c five-day tour includes the Addo and Tsitsikamma entrance fees. The Bokbus five-day tour does not include the Addo entrance fee, so the SANParks conservation fee is paid on top. For the Earthstompers tours, check the inclusions on the product page.

Do I see Addo from an open safari vehicle?

Not by default on the tours we checked. On the Hotspots2c tour, the Addo game drive is in the tour vehicle. On the Earthstompers six-day tour, a drive in an open vehicle is available as an optional extra. Some of the Addo day safaris from Gqeberha use open vehicles — our sister site addoelephantsafari.com lists which.

Do the tours return to Cape Town?

Most are round trips from Cape Town. The Earthstompers five-day Garden Route & Addo Safari ends in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) instead, which suits you if you fly on from there.

Can I combine Addo with the Garden Route in fewer than five days?

Not on the guided tours from Cape Town on this site: the ones that include Addo run five or six days. The shorter tours visit private game reserves such as Botlierskop or the Garden Route Game Lodge instead.

What happens in peak season?

Hotspots2c notes that on its five-day tour between mid-December and early January you may stay two nights in Jeffreys Bay instead of Addo. December and January are also South African school holidays, so book early for those weeks.

Can I cancel?

Yes, but the deadlines differ: the Hotspots2c tour can be cancelled free of charge up to 2 days before departure, the Earthstompers and Bokbus tours up to 24 hours before. The policy at checkout is the binding one.
