Activities along the Garden Route

Seals in Plettenberg Bay, the forest canopy at Storms River and the Knysna lagoon — what each activity involves, and how it fits into a self-drive trip or a spare day.

From west to east, three stretches of the Garden Route lie close together: the lagoon at Knysna, the bay at Plettenberg Bay and the forest around Storms River at the edge of Tsitsikamma National Park. Each has an activity you can book on its own — useful if you are driving yourself or have a free day on the coast.

The Swim with Seals trip in Plettenberg Bay (currently 4.7★ from 1,014 reviews) takes you by boat into a marine protected area, the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour (currently 4.7★ from 525 reviews) runs through the forest at Storms River, and the Knysna Lagoon Cruise (currently 4.6★ from 505 reviews) is a 75-minute boat trip. All three can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before.

Knysna: a 75-minute lagoon cruise

The shortest of the three (currently R 500 per person): 75 minutes on the Knysna lagoon with Knysna Boat Charters. It is a boat trip rather than an active outing, which makes it the easy option if you are staying in Knysna or passing through. Our check could not confirm the departure point — see the product page.

Reviewers like the guides and the views. Two reviewers say their cruise was shorter than the advertised 75 minutes, and one found that the guide gave information only when asked. The cruise depends on the weather; one reviewer had theirs moved to the next morning because of rain.

Plettenberg Bay: swimming with Cape fur seals

Offshore Adventures takes you by boat from Central Beach in Plettenberg Bay into the Robberg Marine Protected Area, home to a large colony of Cape fur seals (currently R 1,295 per person). You spend up to 30 minutes in the water with the seals; wetsuit, mask and fins are provided, and the whole trip takes about 1.5 hours.

  • Meeting point: Offshore Adventures, Central Beach, Plettenberg Bay — arrive 30 minutes early.
  • Bring: swimwear and a towel; they are not provided.
  • Who it suits: you should be comfortable swimming and getting into the water from a boat. Not suitable for children under 6.

What reviewers report about rabies

Three reviews from December 2025 to April 2026 mention rabies in connection with the seals. Two of them say this was not made clear before booking; one reviewer writes that they only found out on site that special protective measures had to be taken. Read the current notes on the product page before you book.

Three reviews are unhappy with the photos taken in the water: stock photos, the full set of images and videos only available for a fee, or photos that did not arrive. Other reviewers praise the guides, the safety briefing and how close the seals come.

Storms River: the Tsitsikamma canopy tour

Stormsriver Adventures runs a canopy tour of about 2.5 hours in the forest at Storms River, at the eastern end of the Garden Route (currently R 895 per person). It is the natural activity for a night in Storms River Village — which is where the four-day Bokbus tour spends its second night.

Our check could not confirm the meeting point, the minimum age or any weight limits for this tour. For a canopy tour these details matter, so read them on the product page before you book.

Reviewers praise the guides and the views through the treetops. Three reviewers found it tamer than expected, and one spent more time waiting in the group than ziplining. On safety the reviews differ: one asks for a higher standard, others praise it.

On a guided tour?

The multi-day tours from Cape Town set their own programme, and free time for extra bookings depends on the day. On the Hotspots2c tours, optional activities such as the Bloukrans bungee jump or an elephant encounter are offered during the tour and paid locally. If you want to add one of the activities above to a tour, check the itinerary of that tour first — the operator decides where the group stops and for how long.

Knysna: 75-Minute Lagoon Cruise

★ 4.6 (505 reviews)

“The lagoon cruise is really relaxing with the most beautiful views and scenery. The boat itself is clean and modern and the guide Justin a local from Knysna was very friendly and informative. This cruise is highly recommended and good value for money !”
Sherwin · South Africa · April 2026
“Great day out!! Just check the weather forecast before you book. It was rainy on the day we booked our cruise, but the guide was happy to reschedule our cruise to the following morning. Definitely highly recommended!”
Bianca · South Africa · April 2026
Critical review
“If a 75-minute boat trip is sold, it shouldn't be a little less than an hour. The boat driver should take care of starting the engines and docking again. Otherwise, the scenery is very beautiful!”
Joerg · Germany · February 2026 · translated review

Reviewers praise the guides, the views and the relaxed pace. Two reviewers say the cruise was shorter than the advertised 75 minutes; one of them describes it as a little less than an hour. One found that the guide gave information only when asked, and one describes a steering failure after 30 minutes and a wait of an hour for help. The cruise depends on the weather: one reviewer had theirs moved to the next morning because of rain.

Plettenberg Bay: Swim with Seals

★ 4.7 (1,014 reviews)

“This is an excellent activity. Very well run by knowledgeable guides who clearly care about the environment of the seals. The safety brief was well delivered. We felt safe and looked after the whole time. would 100% recommend this company.”
Jeannette · United Kingdom · September 2026
Critical review
“Well, apart from the fact that we only found out on site that special protective measures had to be taken because seals can transmit rabies, we couldn't enjoy swimming with the animals because the guides forced us to swim very close to each other. As a result, we had more fins from other participants in front of our faces than we did seals. The included photos are a joke, because they are stock photos of seals …”
Anja · Germany · April 2026 · translated review

Reviewers praise the guides, the safety briefing and how close the seals come. Three reviews from December 2025 to April 2026 mention rabies in connection with the seals, and two of them say this was not made clear before booking. Three reviews are unhappy with the photos: stock photos, the full set of images and videos only available for a fee, or photos that did not arrive. One reviewer describes poor visibility and around 15 to 20 minutes in the water, and one found that the group had to swim very close together. Read the current notes on the product page before you book.

Tsitsikamma: Canopy Tour

★ 4.7 (525 reviews)

“Brilliant zipline experience. The guides (Janice and Nicole) were attentive, knowledgeable, friendly and communicative. 2 hours of a lot of fun! Great activity and team. Definitely recommend.”
Al · United Kingdom · November 2025
“Great! Even with my extreme fear of heights, it was a wonderful experience”
Marlous · South Africa · July 2026
Critical review
“It's a nice thing, being so high up in the treetops. The guides are super nice, really look after you, and share interesting facts about the trees here and there. At the same time, the whole thing seems very staged, and you end up waiting more in a group of seven than you actually spend time ziplining. It's definitely a fun interlude, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.”
Anja · Germany · October 2025 · translated review

Reviewers praise the guides, the views and the focus on safety. Three reviewers found it tamer than expected: one says everything was done for you, one found it staged, and one found it not as exhilarating as some other ziplines. One reviewer spent more time waiting in the group than ziplining. On safety the reviews differ: one three-star review says it needs a higher standard, another says the standards are far higher than in Germany.
