Day by day: 3-Day Garden Route Highlights & 4x4 Safari
This is the three-day tour that reaches the Garden Route coast (currently R 7,480 per person). It leaves from a meeting point near the DHL Stadium in Green Point at 6:45am; hotel pick-up within 5 km of central Cape Town is possible if you book at least two days ahead.
Day 1 — Route 62 and Oudtshoorn. About 450 km and around six hours on the road, through mountain passes, the Karoo and wine country, with a visit to the limestone chambers of the Cango Caves. Night in Oudtshoorn.
Day 2 — to the coast. About 400 km and around four hours. A paddle along the reed-lined river banks near Wilderness National Park; an elephant encounter and the Bloukrans bungee jump are offered as options, paid locally. Night in Sedgefield or Wilderness.
Day 3 — game drive and the long way home. About two hours in an open 4x4 at the Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, then about 450 km and around six hours back to Cape Town, arriving between 8pm and 10pm.
You choose where you sleep when you book — backpacker, 3-star or 4-star, with different properties for each class — and two breakfasts are included; other meals are not. The operator calls the tour fast-paced and aimed at travellers with limited time, and lists it as unsuitable for children under 8, pregnant travellers and anyone with back problems.
Day by day: 3-Day Garden Route Safari & Coastal Tour
The Bokbus tour trades the Garden Route towns for the coast closer to Cape Town and a night at a game lodge (currently R 13,664 per person). Pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation are included, and groups are limited to 10.
Day 1 — the Overberg coast. The African penguin colony at Betty’s Bay, then Hermanus and Cape Agulhas, the southern tip of Africa. Night in a 4-star guest house, dinner included.
Day 2 — to the Garden Route Game Lodge. An afternoon game drive of about two hours in an open safari vehicle, a three-course dinner and the night at the lodge.
Day 3 — early drive and Route 62. A second game drive in the early morning, breakfast, then back to Cape Town via Route 62 with a wine tasting, arriving around 5pm to 6pm.
Two dinners and two breakfasts are included; lunches are not. Hermanus is famous for whale watching, but the season runs roughly June to November — on a summer trip, count on the penguins rather than the whales.
The two-day options: safari trips with a Garden Route label
The two-day tours are built around game drives and do not visit Knysna, Plettenberg Bay or Tsitsikamma. That is not a flaw — it is what fits into two days from Cape Town — but it is worth knowing before the name sets your expectations.
The 2-Day Safari at Garden Route Game Lodge (Bokbus) (currently R 10,206 per person) drives via Hermanus to Cape Agulhas, then on to the lodge near Albertinia for a sunset drive, a three-course dinner and a night in a 4-star chalet or lodge room; a morning drive and breakfast follow before the return in the evening. Groups are limited to 12, and the lodge lies in a malaria-free area.
The 2-Day Wildlife & Safari Tour (Hotspots2c) (currently R 5,709 per person) heads about 450 km east to the Botlierskop reserve for a 4x4 drive, spends the night in Oudtshoorn in the accommodation class you pick, and adds a bush drive at the Buffelsdrift reserve the next morning before about 400 km back via Route 62. One breakfast is included. The operator itself notes that leopards are unlikely to be seen on these drives.
What two or three days realistically give you
A short Garden Route tour is a highlights sprint. On the Hotspots2c tours you spend 4 to 6 hours a day in the vehicle, and hotel pick-ups add time at the start and end of the day. In exchange you see landscapes you would otherwise need a hire car and a plan for: Route 62 and the Karoo, the Cango Caves, the coast around Wilderness, and at least one game drive.
If Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and the forests of Tsitsikamma are the reason you are going, three days are tight: the itineraries here do not list them as stops. The four-day Bokbus tour includes Knysna, a night in Storms River Village and Tsitsikamma National Park, and the five- and six-day tours add Addo Elephant National Park — you find them on our overview of all Garden Route tours.
