Best time to visit the Garden Route

The southern summer is peak season on the coast; the whales come in winter and spring. What each season means for a guided tour from Cape Town.

There is no single best month for the Garden Route — it depends on what you want from the trip. The southern summer brings the busiest weeks on the coast, with South African school holidays in December and January. The whales that make Hermanus famous are there in winter and spring, roughly June to November, and on a summer trip a whale stop is unlikely to show any. Rain can turn up in any season, and the operators adjust the programme when it does.

The tours below run from Cape Town; what changes with the season is how busy the coast is, whether the whales are there and how the weather shapes the days.

Southern summer: peak season on the coast

December and January are South African school holidays. The coastal towns are busy, and accommodation along the route fills early — on a guided tour the beds are booked for you, but it pays to book the tour itself as soon as your dates are fixed. If you want to keep your options open, note the cancellation rules: free cancellation up to 24 hours before on most tours here, and up to 2 days before on the Hotspots2c tours.

Peak season can also change the itinerary. Hotspots2c notes that on its five-day Garden Route & Addo tour between mid-December and early January you may stay two nights in Jeffreys Bay instead of Addo.

Whale season: winter and spring

Southern right whales come to the bay at Hermanus in the southern winter and spring. The Hermanus Whale Festival gives the season as June to early December, with the most sightings from August to October. Several tours here pass through Hermanus: the Bokbus Safari & Coastal tour and the two-day Game Lodge tour on their first day, and the four-day Bokbus tour on its way back to Cape Town.

On a trip between January and May, Hermanus is a coastal stop rather than a whale-watching stop. The tours do not promise whales, and neither do we — wildlife sightings are not something you can book.

Rain on the road

The reviews we collected mention rain in February, April, May and June. The operators react by moving things around: one reviewer describes the guide reorganising the schedule when rain hit on the first day, another had program changes in extreme weather and still enjoyed the tour, and a reviewer of the two-day Game Lodge tour mentions warm waterproof ponchos handed out for the rain. On the Knysna lagoon cruise, one reviewer had the cruise moved to the next morning because of rain. One review from June describes two days on which the national parks and trails were closed because of the risk of flash floods; the group fitted the activities into the remaining days.

Pack a rain jacket whatever the season, and read the itinerary with some flexibility in mind: Hotspots2c notes that its itineraries can change and occasionally run in reverse order.

Park fees change every November

South African National Parks revises its conservation fees every 1 November. If your tour does not include the Addo entrance fee, the amount you pay at the park depends on when you travel — the current fee for Addo, with the date it is valid until, is in the Addo section of our overview page.

★
In short

Travelling in December or January? Book early and expect a busy coast. Hoping for whales at Hermanus? Go between June and early December, ideally August to October. Whatever the month, pack for rain and treat wildlife as a bonus, not a promise.

From Cape Town: 3-Day Garden Route Highlights and 4x4 Safari

★ 4.8 (151 reviews)

“Due to extreme bad weather there were some switches in the program but I still had a wonderfull time and made some amazing memories!”
Chantal · Netherlands · May 2026

The praise is for the guides and for how much the three days pack in. Most of the critical points concern the shape of the tour rather than the guides. Two reviewers found that most activities beyond the caves, the paddle and the game drive cost extra, and one had ethical concerns about the hands-on animal encounters offered where the optional elephant walk takes place. Two found the bungee detour on day 2 a long drive and a long wait if you are not jumping — a point a five-star review makes too. Two said they were not told in advance that the cave route is narrow and involves climbing, two spent more time in the vehicle than they expected, and one felt the guide acted more like a driver. Several of the critical reviews are from 2019 to 2024.

From Cape Town: 5-Day Best of Garden Route and Addo Safari

★ 4.7 (246 reviews)

“The Garden Route trip was exceptional from start to finish. When unexpected rain hit on the first day, Uriel reorganized the schedule professionally and ensured we made the most of our time. His ability to adapt was impressive. We saw an incredible variety of animals at different safari locations, exceeding expectations. …”
Fiona · Germany · February 2026

Reviewers praise the guides — several are named — and the variety along the way. The criticism is consistent: three critical reviews say too much of the tour is spent in the vehicle and too little at the places themselves, and two five-star reviews mention the long hours on the road too, while saying it was worth it. One reviewer found the minivan uncomfortable and the days thin on activities unless you pay for extras, and one found the standard of the backpacker option uneven. Worth knowing: the Addo game drive on this tour is in the tour vehicle, not in an open safari vehicle.

From Cape Town: 2-Day Safari at Garden Route Game Lodge

★ 4.8 (1,042 reviews)

“This is an excellent trip and very good value for money. We saw so many animals desbite the rain. We were very well looked after and provided with warm waterproof ponchos for the rain. the accommodation amd food was excellent. Frank our driver/guide from cape town was excellent. Very friendly amd knowledeable and he took great care of us with regular sighseeing stops and comfort breaks. …”
Natalie · United Kingdom · June 2026
Critical review
“It wasn't what I expected. It's an open zoo, and we didn't see any lions or many animals. The only positive thing is the bedroom.”
Turki · Saudi Arabia · September 2026 · translated review

Most reviewers praise the guides, the lodge and the game drives as a compact first taste of safari. The critical reviews centre on one point: four of them say the reserve did not feel like a real safari — a small park, fences between some of the animals, lions that are fed, and in two of them the word “zoo”. That matches what the Garden Route Game Lodge is: a private game reserve, not a national park. If a national park is what you are after, the five- and six-day tours here include Addo Elephant National Park. Two critical reviews also found the minibus cramped for the long drive — a point that comes up in a five-star review and in the booking platform’s own review summary as well — and one reviewer counted 8 hours and 45 minutes on the road from Cape Town to the lodge.

Cape Town: Garden Route and Addo Elephant Park 6-Day Safari

★ 4.8 (184 reviews)

“The week long experience was excellent. We did and saw so much in the 6 days. Every day was different. We were unfortunate to be caught in bad weather for 2 days when the all the National Parks and trails were closed due to the risk of flash floods however we managed move around the activities and managed to fit them in on the remaining days. …”
Rachel · United Kingdom · June 2026

The reviews centre on the guides and the mix of places; several mention the group as a plus, one of them especially for solo travellers. We found one critical review with text: it praises the sightseeing, the accommodation and the food but found the long stretches in a not-so-comfortable minibus a drawback. A five-star review also mentions long days in the van and a breakdown that cost a few hours, and one from June describes two days when the national parks and trails were closed because of the risk of flash floods — the group fitted the activities into the remaining days.

Knysna: 75-Minute Lagoon Cruise

★ 4.6 (505 reviews)

“Great day out!! Just check the weather forecast before you book. It was rainy on the day we booked our cruise, but the guide was happy to reschedule our cruise to the following morning. Definitely highly recommended!”
Bianca · South Africa · April 2026

Reviewers praise the guides, the views and the relaxed pace. Two reviewers say the cruise was shorter than the advertised 75 minutes; one of them describes it as a little less than an hour. One found that the guide gave information only when asked, and one describes a steering failure after 30 minutes and a wait of an hour for help. The cruise depends on the weather: one reviewer had theirs moved to the next morning because of rain.

FAQ

When is the best time for a Garden Route tour?

It depends on your priorities. The southern summer, especially the December and January school holidays, is the busiest time on the coast. For whales at Hermanus, travel between June and early December; the Hermanus Whale Festival names August to October as the peak. Rain can come in any season.

Will I see whales on a Garden Route tour in summer?

Unlikely. The whale season off Hermanus runs from June to early December, so on a trip between January and May the Hermanus stop on the Bokbus tours is a coastal stop, not a whale-watching one.

How early should I book for December or January?

As early as your dates allow. December and January are South African school holidays, and the coast is busy. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before (2 days on the Hotspots2c tours) makes an early booking easier to change.

What happens if it rains?

The operators adjust the programme where they can. Reviews describe a guide reorganising the schedule, ponchos handed out for the rain and a Knysna lagoon cruise moved to the next morning; one review from June mentions national parks and trails closed for two days because of the risk of flash floods.

Does the itinerary change in peak season?

It can. Hotspots2c notes that on its five-day Garden Route & Addo tour between mid-December and early January you may stay two nights in Jeffreys Bay instead of Addo.
